Sports and Risk
Sports, by nature, are meant to push people to their very limits.

Race car drivers test the limits of speed and machines.

Football players (American/Canadian) test the limits of strength.

Runners test the limits of the human body and speed.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

But is the spirit of competition being dampened by rules designed to protect people from themselves?

Things like Hans devices for race car drivers ... padding each and every goal post on the field ... making sure coaches speak to their teams in ethical, moral and inspiration terms -- or letting them go ... ?

What do you think? Do athletes/competitors need more protection? Or do they know and understand the risks of pushing things to the limit?

The last thing we need is more bubbles. But there is a difference between putting a bubble around someone and taking reasonable precautions. Hans device, seatbelts, etc. in race cars = reasonable precautions. Changing what coaches say to their teams = bubbling.

Implementing sound, safety measures proactively is a best practice in my view. So too is not coddling athletes.

Speaking respectfully to people, no matter whom, is just plain common sense. Caoches or athletes who don't should be removed imho.

It greatly concerns me that in a sport like drag racing, where horsepower and speeds have increased far more than safety measure have, while distances stayed the same, that it takes so many deaths to ignite change. That is disrespectful to athletes, teams, families and the fans. NHRA and minor orgs -- hang your heads in shame. Mind you, they aren't the only ones.
