Spiritual Benefits of Meditation
The longer an individual practices meditation, the greater the likelihood that his or her goals and efforts will shift toward personal and spiritual growth. Many individuals who initially learn meditation for its self-regulatory aspects find that as their practice deepens they are drawn more and more into the realm of the "spiritual." In her work with many cancer and AIDS patients, Dr. Borysenko has observed that many are most interested in meditation as a way of becoming more attuned to the spiritual dimension of life. She reports that many die "healed," in a state of compassionate self-awareness and self-acceptance.

RE: Meditation
I agree on that spirituality part. Some do meditate for those reasons. I, however, have not.
Meditation, for me, has been very therapeutic and instrumental in areas that I would have otherwise sought out medicinal assistance. Example: if I'm anxious, distracted, depressed about something? What's Xanax or Prozac going to do for me? Just simply resolve the symptoms, but not the factors that contributed to those things. For me those issues are generally situational and not hereditary. There are others who certainly benefit from medicinal help but I believe using meditation for me has been VERY helpful in keeping my mind on track and healthier than it's been in a long time. Meditation can be done in whatever way (IMHO) helps you to focus inward. It doesn't necessarily mean you light candles by the full moon and sit indian style with your hands at your side, eyes closed and mutter "OHM" several times. Meditation is about breathing...focus...and letting go.
I wouldn't say I incorporate this in my every day needs, but I do, when I find myself out of sorts, stopping what I'm doing and looking inward and just taking a second to calm down...focus and redirect the negative energy out...
